Major Focus Areas of Social Studies
Focus on Social Studies
What thoughts come to mind as you think about social studies? I think about history and geography. But social studies also encompasses economics, government, culture, and living in society.
What is the major focus of social studies?
The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
It is the various aspects or branches of the study of human society, considered as an educational discipline. History also is the study of change and development in society over time. By this, the study of history enables us to understand how past human action affects the present and influences our future, and it allows us to evaluate these effects.
•Civics
Civics is defined as: the study or science of the privileges and obligations of citizens. Civic education is the study of the theoretical, political and practical aspects of citizenship, as well as its rights and duties. Like for example ; voting in elections, signing up for the military.
•Geography
Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and change over time. It is also the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth's surface and the human societies spread across it. It also enables students to see how people adapt to their environment and how human activities are modified by the environment; it fosters abstract thinking as students master geographical concepts; it also provides the opportunity for students to critically think about, and examine, issues and social problems.
•Economics
It is the study of how people, businesses, governments, and societies make choices about how to allocate resources and to cope with scarcity.
